Schoolin’

I signed up for a distance ed. class at ACC yesterday for News Reporting I. I just got the syllabus via email and read through it. My first thoughts are “This is kind of ball-busting.”

Clearly an indicator that I have not been in school for way too long. What a wuss. I’m such a sissy.

But! This will be good to have daily writing assignments, what appears to be a teacher who will show no mercy and a taste of potential things to come. This will require extreme time management. This will require… getting up early. Oh yes! I will get up early! Hear me now! I’m not making it up this time! I’m really going to do it! I will!

Dammit.

I know you all can’t wait for the assignment (week 9) titled: “Car wreck on highway 290″.

Awesome. I’ll post as soon as it’s done!

I had a good day today with my mom roaming the nether-regions of Northeast Iowa. We were slow this morning and left for Clarksville around 12:30 to see my grandpa. He turned 95 last month and today seemed as sharp as a tack. I sat with him alone for quite a while and recorded our chat with the MD. The recording turned out good and crisp. He seemed happy to see me and I heard a few new stories from him that had me giggling. I like my grandpa.

Mom and I went to the cemetary then to check on Grandma’s grave and then on to Cedar Falls to hook up with db. It was very good to see him and we got caught up while Mom roamed downtown. He gave me a new book (_The Rings of Saturn_) and a mix-cd, which I am jazzed about. Mom and I went and checked out Dad’s bench at the jazz festival site by the river and then headed back to M-town where we went straight to dinner, of which I ate much.

It’s so beautiful here. It’s cool and clear and the moon is bright. I sat out for a while tonight and got an awesome recording of the trains and the crickets and perhaps a little singing. I am re-smitten with the MD. I had forgotten what excellent recordings it makes, even with the little Sony clip mic I have. I’m so enjoying walking barefoot everywhere and how quiet and clean and isolated it is here. I’m not ready to go back. Bleah. So not ready.

It’s been a good visit.

Sofia Grace

Yesterday Audrey and Carlos had their baby, Sofia Grace. I am her godmother! Audrey and baby are healthy and well after a short labor. I went and saw them last night and welcomed Sofia to the world. At 10 hours old and 6 pounds, she is the tiniest, newest baby I have ever held. Smaller than a loaf of bread. She is amazing. She has long fingers and I am already scheming about teaching her to play piano. I sang her a little song and told her I would be the best God-momma I knew to be and I would teach her everything I could. It’s so strange to hold this little being and understand that you would do anything for them. Such a tiny little being, it made me weep.

Oh the deliciousness. Last night Nevets and Tom trucked a table, some mixing decks and 2 Mackies on stands out onto the Lamar ped bridge and threw themselves a party. Bug and I got there a wee bit after 10 and we saw the small crowd but didn’t hear the beats until we were 50 feet from them. Oh yes, lovely lovely people dancing to lovely lovely beats. It was a pretty, cool night, by Austin standards, and all of the lights were reflecting off of the water below. At its peak there were probably about 75 people there between folks who had been emailed and the random kids walking across the bridge who stopped to hang out. I had guessed that we might be able to go an hour and a half before being shut down by the cops but nary a bike cop came nor were we hassled by anyone else and they were still turning up the volume by the time I left, three hours later. So nice to go outside in the middle of the city and dance my ass off under the sky. I am smitten with something, but I can’t name it. Nameless summer something, I am smitten with you. Yes, you!
